Japanese pottery (4 weeks)


About this course: This program is designed to give beginners in ceramics and those who aspire to become a ceramic artist the foundations of traditional Japanese methods. Students will gain both theory and practical knowledge with hands-on approach to the techniques involved. The class size is deliberately kept small to ensure the best learning experience.

Suitable for: Beginners to intermediate.

Tuition fee: ¥365,000

Inclusive of studio materials (clay and glazes), Japanese pottery tools, Firing (Maximum final firing weight: 15 kg). Please note that accommodation, transportation, meals and packing/shipping services are not included in the tuition.

What you will learn: A step by step process on making traditional Japanese pottery:

  • Wedging

  • Wheel throwing

  • Trimming

  • Glazing/painting

  • Firing theory

Shapes we will practice include:

  • Japanese Tea Cups

  • Rice bowls

  • Sake bottles

  • Cylinders

If there are any requests on specific shapes you would like to learn please let us know.

Studio open days/hours: Monday-Friday/ 8:30 to 17:00

Teaching Language: The main teaching language will be in Japanese. Our Sensei’s speak limited English, however our studio assistant speaks conversational English and will do his best to translate.

About the Potter’s Wheel: Please note that we turn the potter’s wheel clockwise in Japan. When you need the pottery master’s demonstration and advice, he will use the potter’s wheel clockwise.

About the accommodation: There are weekly to monthly furnished apartments offerings online. We are happy to assist you in helping finding an apartment.
